The task before DA with Smekja project re-design was to restore the old palace and expand around it, all the while carefully observing the traditional context and implied strict requirements of protection of cultural heritage. Following on the trends detectable in the modern life of old Italian cities native to Smekja Palace design (e.g. the palaces of Venice, Palazzo Tornabuoni in Florence), the intention was to turn a historic building into a rare and stylish resort, thus reviving it into a protagonist role which steps out of the background onto the rich social stage of a contemporary Mediterranean setting.
